Martin Blackshaw is a British author of gritty, historically grounded pirate fiction. His Penjerrick Chronicles follow Jacob Penjerrick through the violence, ambition and divided loyalties of the seventeenth-century Caribbean.
Drawing on contemporary accounts and modern historical research, Martin blends fictional characters with real people, places and events. His stories explore a world in which sailors, privateers and buccaneers fought for survival between competing empires—and where the line separating duty, freedom and piracy was rarely clear.
Inspired by writers including Bernard Cornwell, Patrick O’Brian and C. S. Forester, Martin aims to capture the excitement of swashbuckling adventure without losing the danger, hardship and moral uncertainty of the period.
The Pirate’s Wake begins the Penjerrick Chronicles, followed by Dead Man’s Debt.
Why I Write Pirate Fiction
I have always been drawn to historical adventure—stories that place ordinary people inside dangerous moments and force them to make difficult choices.
The seventeenth-century Caribbean offers everything a novelist could want: rival empires, fragile colonies, brutal naval warfare and men attempting to escape the lives into which they were born. The real buccaneers were neither the cheerful rogues of popular culture nor simple storybook villains. They lived in a violent, uncertain world where the difference between sailor, privateer and pirate could depend upon little more than a commission, a governor or the outcome of a war.
When writing the Penjerrick Chronicles, I want readers to feel the salt, heat, hunger and fear behind the adventure—and to understand why a young man like Jacob might risk everything for the promise of freedom.
